Photographing the Ngorongoro crater, Serengeti and Manyara National Park with the Panasonic Lumix fz200

With an overland trip to Africa booked, I had one big thing on my mind; which camera should I take? I wanted something that could out perform a standard point and shoot, but I had no experience in photography, a relatively small budget, and I needed something that would be practical to take on a safari.

I went for the fz200 in the end, and thought I'd share some pictures and my experience of using it here.

To summarise; the FZ200 is perfect for a beginner, not least thanks to Graham Houghton's youtube series which made it easy to master. It takes impressive pictures in most situations and the zoom is decent. The general image quality was really high and at times I was incredibly impressed with the results it gave. However, there wasn't always a notable difference between the images captured by the fz200 and those captured on some of the more advanced point and shoot cameras people were carrying (tz70 for example), and of course the advantages of having a compact around your wrist on safari are bound to present themselves in some amazing opportunistic shots which those of us fiddling around with bridge and dslr cameras occasionally missed.

Nevertheless I found the camera intuitive and fun to use. I was impressed with the pictures I took, and how they held up against those that had been taken on more expensive dslr's. There were times when I couldn't get the shot I wanted; usually in situations where you'd need four figures worth of glass in front of the lens to achieve it. If money were no object I'd say take something like a tz70 and team it up with a dslr with an amazing zoom lens.

But just for holiday snaps to wow family and friends with, the fz200 definitely does the job!
